Continuous vs Chopped Carbon Fiber in 3D Printing

ENGINEERING GUIDE 01

Continuous vs Chopped Carbon Fiber in 3D Printing

Both systems use carbon fiber, but their reinforcement form, design freedom and suitable applications are different.

01

How the reinforcement differs

Chopped fibers are short strands distributed through the thermoplastic matrix. Continuous fibers are laid as uninterrupted paths inside selected layers and regions of a printed part.

02

Where each system fits

Chopped-fiber materials can improve stiffness, dimensional behavior and surface response across the whole part. Continuous reinforcement is considered when load direction and local structural needs justify planned fiber paths.

03

Choose from the application

The correct choice depends on geometry, loading, temperature, interfaces, quantity and cost. A continuous-fiber part is not automatically better in every direction or for every use case.
